There is a range of places to see in our part of Hampshire and we are only 25 miles from the coast and yet within easy reach of London.
In Oakhanger itself, there is a 19th century church overlooking the village green. At the edge of the village is Shortheath Common, a site of Special Scientific Interest. This ancient common land has been awarded special conservation status in recognition of the habitats it encompasses.
The Hanger Free House opened in the village in 2020 offering excellent food (01420 478673). The Chocolate Frog Tea Rooms ( chocolatefrogcompany.co.uk ), just a few minutes away, offers breakfasts, coffees, light lunches and teas.
Places to visit within easy reach include:
Selborne. The one time of home of naturalist, Gilbert White, whose house and garden are open to the public, including the museum of Capt Oates. The house holds an unusual plant sale every summer in June.
Chawton. The former home of Jane Austen is open to the public and well worth a visit.
Alton. As well as offering the usual range of shops, there is the Curtis Museum and Allen Gallery. The Watercress Line, a Heritage Steam Railway, runs between Alton and Alresford (www.watercressline.co.uk).
Between Bordon and Farnham is Birdworld, Britain's largest bird park and gardens.
